For my techie friends out there

Chas and I have a sorta ritual...we like to look at icanhascheezburger.com at the lol cats together, though he checks more often that I do. We found this one last night and couldn't stop laughing.

ADSL=Asymetric Digital Subscriber Line

Most people just think of it as DSL as most residential DSL internet is sold that way by the phone companies, even though it really is ADSL. It is asymetric because there is a larger download speed than upload speed. This is because most home users want/use more download power than upload. SDSL is symetric, so the upload and download speeds are the same. The same type of asymetric service is also mirrored with residential cable service. At Brighthouse Networks for example, the standard service is 7mbps/512kbps (or you can look at it like this: 7000kbps/512kbps as 1mbps=1000kbps). The download speed of 7mbps/7000kbps is much greater than the upload speed of 512kbps.

IP=Internet Protocol

IP addresses are your place on the internet to send and receive data from. Residentially speaking, you typically get a "dynamic" IP address, which changes periodically, based on the lease it has. Businesses can get "static" ip addresses because they have to have the same fixed location all the time for things like websites and email servers. Anyhow, when you connect to the internet, you acquire an IP address from your internet provider's servers, whether dynamic or static.
