I want this ring...

14K Gold White Topaz Milgrain Ring

I like it in part by it's simplicity, but elegance...the milgrain and swirl on the sides is a nice touch. Also, it is similar to diamond being clear, but has none of the conflict that diamonds have, to my knowledge (and yes there are conflict-free diamonds out there, but white topaz is a little different and unique). Additionally, it does not cost 2 months salary, or whatever that bs is about diamond rings.

The ring is indeed elegantly simplistic. It's also my favourite cut stone.

I like all the shades that Topaz comes in.

Truthfully, I am not a Diamond or Diamond-y girl at all, just never have been. And it's not to do with whether they do or don't cost a lot.

When I had been married, I begged for a very small diamond [before I realized that it could be perfectly fine to have ANY type of ring, or stone that I would actually like! So I got a teeny stone.

Not long after, it fell out. It was a cheapo ring, the way I begged that it should be, so not surprising. THEN, he when he went to replace it, he thought he'd surprise me by putting in a much larger stone, a .4 carrot diamond, and I told him it was very sweet, but we should take it back, and he assured me that it was very cheap cause it had a fairly large carbon in it, and he took me to the jeweler to prove it. And there it was, and I was more fascinated by the fact it had that cool carbon in it than anything...

...but soon, I just didn't like that it was set up so high, so noticeable and flashy, and in the way, with everything the type of things I do with my hands...

So after about a year...

I sent away for sterling silver celtic knotted matching bands, no stones. [from Pyramid, actually] They were wide bands, the knot work was cool. It was comfortable, no setting or stone to knock around and get in my way, and they were only $20.00 each.

I wore it until about 4 months before I kicked him out of the house, which is when the courts count as our legal separation. So I wore it for about six of the almost nine years of marriage.

If I were to ever marry again, no diamond-y ring for moi.

I love that you brought up conflict-free diamonds by the way. COOL of you.
The film Blood Diamond is actually very good, and FINALLY they are taking the issue that's been for years, and bringing it up into the mainstream. Sometimes it takes a movie for people to even listen or know something that's been going on all along. Did you see it yet?

Topaz are nice stones.

Well...when Chas and I had discussed getting married (yes, we planned it, no surprises, we just mutually agreed), my engagement was a claddagh...I did not want a diamond ring, and Chas really liked the concept the claddagh represents, so we picked out a ring together, and the one we picked was silver with marcasite in the crown. The marcasite fell out a few times, and now rests in my jewelry drawer, but that is ok, because it was never really a ring I could wear with a/my wedding band. Our wedding bands, as you may recall, were made by a local artist in town, and are somewhat Celtic in that it is a braided ring, rather than being a knot. I know I showed you a picture, but that is really a bad picture because it is cell and all.

When the 10 years came 'round, I knew I wanted something significant, because my wedding band is solid metal. I was intrigued by the past, present, future scams, but I admit I did want something sparkly. At first I looked at diamonds, but tried to go the non-traditional route (because so many diamond rings are so similar and SO BORING) and it is then that I learned, via our roomie at the time...the one who has been MIA since Sept), about the conflict diamonds and did research on it. I decided on sapphire at that time for the significance of the stone relating to our anniversary month...September. The ring I got, which I have posted pics of in the past (but I will link if you need a refresher), does have tiny tiny tiny chips in them, and they are hardly noticeable next to the deep blue sapphire. I got the ring on sale and it did not break the bank...was about $100 with shipping.

I saw a ring with neptune's garden topaz, I had a link to it I think, in a post a few months back. Unfortunately, I never got it, and it is gone now. Poopie. :(

If I were to divorce and remarry again, I think that I would like a sparkly, but not necessarily a diamond...probably an aquamarine of vintage style, and not something huge and gaudy either...but I like that the white topaz here looks diamond-y enough. This one stirkes my fancy and is CZ, but looks like decent quality CZ. (http://www.ziamond.com/asscherpetite.html) This is nice too. (http://www.ziamond.com/jenriin25ctc.html) A colored gem might be a nice change for an ER

Oh yeah, I do recall about your ring, the story, and the ring, and px you sent, too. Cause I wasn't too sure you were even married when we first met in person. heh! ;-)

The Sapphire route was a nice choice indeed, matching it to month you were married. I recall the px. Nice.

Cool you were informed by your roomie and then did your own research. Yes, we are pretty informed about the diamond issue, what goes on in Africa, and then here and etc., and was so surprised they made a movie!

Some CZs are really very nice.

Some of my fave stones are Moonstones, Opals, Garnets, Peridots, and all shades of Jade, hee.

Peridot is my birthstone, and can be quite nice, only I tend to see it paired with yellow gold a lot, and I just prefer white gold to yellow. I like tanzanite , aquamarine, amythest, sapphire, topaz, some tourmaline, amber, carnelian, and many others, though some I like you rarely see in rings, or in rings that would fit my petite fingers/hands. There is a beautiful carnelian ring I like from Pyramid, but I hesitate buying it because it looks like it might be gigantic on my finger.

Yup on the white gold. :-)

Oh yeah, one reason I like the sapphire ring I have is that it has a fairly low profile. High rings make me cringe, like how is this going to get damaged or break.

And no, I have not seen the film, but I am aware of it.

Flatter settings much better, yes. And knowing me, I will knock it off. I'm too active.

That is how I feel. I tried a few aquamarines in JC Penny on Saturday, when I was getting myself some new sunglasses...I liked the emerald cut one I saw, but it was a high setting, and there was a rounder one, though with more diamonds on the sides that made it look a little messy, but it was more fluch to my finger and I did like that aspect. If only I could have combined them. :P
