God, I can be such an emotional creature. This is not necessarily a bad thing. But I think I can be a bit more weepy than many.

Not for the first time, I watched the season finale of Degrassi. It was the 2nd part of a two parter. It is playing now because the new season starts next month and they are playing rerun catch up. Long story somewhat shorter, Rick, school outcast gets publicly humiliated, and returns to school with a gun, shooting Jimmy, who he thought was behind the public humiliation (tar and feathering) and attempts to kill Emma, the girl he liked (see my icon) after she said no to him. Her old beau Sean steps in to diffuse the situation, and Rick ends up getting shot in his struggle with Sean, and dies. Jimmy is in ICU from the shot and the whole community is in shock. Of course, emotional me breaks down and cries. Again. Especially when the final scenes with the students gathered at the school in a vigil like attempt played, with this really sad song making an already sad scene even sadder. I wanted to wail out my emotions, to fully let go, but I couldn't. I have far too many people that would totally rip on me for getting that emotional on fictitious characters. But I felt the same intense sadness several years ago in the season finale of Ballykissangel when Assumpta dies.

The original series is now out on dvd, so I really need to get them. That is one of the reasons I watch the new show at all...I like seeing the continuing plots with the adults who were the original kids.

Well, must find more tissues. At least my nose is getting cleared up now.

Rick started out as Terri's boyfriend, but when he got angry, he got abusive. Terri ended up in the hospital. Rick insisted he was sorry and that he never intended to hurt her, but most of Degrassi wanted him gone, especially Spinner and Jay. They humiliated Rick in front of hundreds of people, and then convinced him that Jimmy planned it all. Rick came looking for revenge... with a gun. He shot Jimmy in the back, and targeted Emma. When Sean grabbed the pistol to save her, the gun went off, fatally wounding Rick.

One of the consistently popular guys at school, the type who, once he decided you were a good person, would be a real, true friend. He even eventually got along with Rick, once Jimmy realized that Rick was trying to be a good person. Jimmy had been dating Hazel, playing in Craig's band, and looking for a basketball future. Then his life instantly changed. Rick, believing that Jimmy had betrayed him and humiliated him, came to school with a gun and shot him in the back. Jimmy survived, but he's in the hospital, and no one knows his condition.

Emma's always been an activist, but her activism turned into just self-righteous do-gooding. After her long relationship with Sean went bad, she kind of got revenge crazy. Later she started a crusade against Rick, which turned into pity for him, which he mistook for love. When Rick came to school with a gun seeking his own revenge, he very nearly shot Emma. Sean grabbed the gun, and likely saved her life. Emma's still trying to come to grips with the whole thing.

**Note: Emma was the only student that was also a character in the original series. Her mom, Spike, got pregnant with her in the original show, though I am fairly certain that this is not the same actress that played her as a child even though many of the originals are in the new show, including Spike.

Sean came to Degrassi as Mr. Take-No-Feces who'd been suspended for fighting. Then he went a long way to proving that there's more to him, showing Emma that he's smart and sensitive, and embarking on a long relationship with her. Then he bought a knit hat and tank top and flushed that all away, falling in with Jay and becoming a thieving thug. But then he proved that there's more to him again by pulling his act together enough to live on his own, atoning for his crimes, and falling into a healthy relationship with Ellie. When Rick literally took aim at Emma, Sean put his life on the line. Rick wound up dead, and when Sean finally came to grips with what happened, he decided the best place to be was with his parents, away from Degrassi.

Oh, and I just learned that the-N is not showing the episode from Season 3 called "Accidents Will Happen" because it deals with abortion. Soooo...they'll show episodes dealing with drugs and alcohol, bipolar issues, rape, murder, etc, but they won't show one episode on abortion? Come on guys! Such a cop out. I think personally if the subject is that controversial, the viewers have a right to see it and make their own decisions, and learn from it. This review from amazon for the new dvd set sums it up nicely:

The best reason to buy this DVD is to see episodes of Degrassi as they were originally intended, before being censored by the N. Apparently, parent company Viacom believes it's ok to show young women being date-raped, molested, and beaten by their boyfriends, but never, ever to show them facing the consequences of their sexuality and making responsible decisions about their right to abortion. It's a sorry state of affairs that 15 years ago an episode about abortion from the original Degrassi could air on PBS, but in today's reactionary climate, basic cable, (a medium filled with drugs, sex and violence) couldn't possibly expose young viewers to a teenage girl taking control of her own life, body, and decisions.

Needless to say, I fired off an email stating this to them.

I once went out on a date with the guy who played the girlfriend beating boyfriend named Scott in the original Degrassi High series.

Mind you, we were both pushing 30 when this date happened.

This guy?

Mmhmm, only he doesn't look like that now. He's got better hair, and a goatee.

Was the only photo I could find in the 5-10 minutes I searched. It is amazing how much the actors have retained their original looks. Even Joey Jeremiah, bald in the new show, still radiates the old Joey. Spike and Snake still look the same, though Spike's hair is much tamer.

I've not seen the new series at all. But yeah, I had fantabulous pasta with Byrd.

Nice guy, but not my type.

The first 2 seasons of the original show are on dvd now along with the first 2 seasons of TNG (the new generation) which focuses on Spike's daughter, Emma, and her friends at Degrassi now. Being twice as old as the cast members, it would seem silly for me to watch, but I do. I resisted for a long time, and after I had gotten into the show, I realized the connections to the old show...Spike, Snake, Joey, Caitlin, Mr raddich, and a handful of the old people doing random guest appearances. Not only were the characters the same, but they're played by the original actors as adults now.
