Something strange has happened recently and I really don't understand why. It started a few months ago, when we started seeing trucks for Progress Energy on the road. Oh, another electric company as competitor to the few we have in town I thought. Nothing strange or unusual about that. Then there was the call Chas made to Florida Power, to pay a bill. When he first called, he was greeted with "Thank you for calling Florida Power, a division of Progress Energy, " and then, when he had to call back within 10 minutes, he was greeted, "Thank you for calling Progress Energy, formerly Florida Power." Now, this saddens me. Florida Power is a local company with a long history in Orlando...recently celebrating a milestone anniversary of 75 years. To me, that is impressive. Why was there any need to change? Now, something else that caught us by surprise is that AOL Time Warner, that multi-corporation conglomerate that controls our media, has just changed to Bright House Networks and all we have seen are a few VERY VAGUE ads on tv and, shortly after, saw the name change in guide/preview channel. Forgive me when I say the following, but: What the fuck? Firstly, what corporation is bigger than Time Warner to "buy them out" and secondly, why would such a well known company like AOL TW change their name? Their name is one of the biggest in the industry and instantly recognizable? I haven't actually seen their website, and I *hope* to high heaven that there is a decent reason for this change, but I fear that this change is like all the other mindless changes massive corporations make...for very stupid and pointless reasons. Maybe I'll get the nerve to look at the site, but I am very doubtful that a reasonable explanation will be found.
