Ok, when we last left our heroes (that's me and Chas), it was Tuesday afternoon, the 17th of June. My cd player came in that morning and I was able to get off work early. We did not actually have time to install the cd player before the trip, but we made due with a boom box (sucking massive energy from a horde of batteries!) and our cd/mp3 player hooked to the auxiliary input. After getting some last minute errands out of the way, we finally made our way up to Tallahassee. The drive wasn't too bad, so long as the music was good and loud. It helped that Chas drove too. I just don't like long distance driving...maybe I am freakish. On the way up, we kept seeing signs for a hotel called "Microtel" and we just kept making jokes about it. We said it would be funny if the "micro" part was written like the Microsoft logo and said the tag line should be..."A great place to crash" and something about it being full of bugs. When we actually saw the building in daylight, the building was actually blue. Tee hee hee! So, we got to Tally about 9pm and had dinner at the Cracker Barrel (yummy mac and cheese!) near the hotel we stayed at that night.
Crashed for the night at the hotel, and then the next morning my mom took us out to breakfast, with a small tour of Tallahassee and the downtown area where she works, and then to the outskirts of town where she is buying a house. We saw the house; the current owner let us in, and it looks nice. I hope she will be happy there. From there we went back to the hotel and parted. We headed west towards Niceville, and got there in the mid afternoon. We got some food and bummed around the area a little and waited for Peter to arrive, since he was coming in from Atlanta. His cousins were at the house, so they let us in before he got there, and we relaxed for a little while...Chas on the laptop on the patio, and me with my book on the dock overlooking the bay. That night, Peter took us to a place called The Cattle Company in San Destin. Guess what we had? Yup, beef. Well, I had popcorn shrimp. We watched "The Creeping Terror" (again!) and now Peter knows why I am mentally scarred for life...and so he now shares the pain with us. Lucky for me I was tired and fell asleep a 3rd of the way through it.
Thursday morning I was able to witness Popi teaching Peter how to make bread. Mmmm! Her bread is yummy! The boys went on some errands for Popi later in the day, and she and I bonded a bit. She feels like a second mom to me sometimes. We talked, listened to a little bit of music, and I watched her make the pastitsio for the dinner that night. I also had an interesting conversation with Dr Zachos before Chas and Peter got back. I did a little reading and then had a nap. As the lovely dinner being set out on the table, I awakened and I came downstairs to eat. Salad, homemade rosemary bread, the above mentioned pastitsio, and spanikopita were served, and I cleaned my whole plate. Hooray for me...better yet, hooray for my tummy. Everything was so yummy! Dessert was just some fruit and cheese, and the rest of the wine from the dinner, but very nice. After dinner, and cleaning up, we all watched Eddie Izzard's Dressed to Kill. Chas and I had shown it to Peter a while back, and he liked it so much that he bought the dvd. We weren't sure his parents would like it all, but once it got going, they were laughing so hard they were crying. We got a call from one of Peter's friends as the show was ending. She wanted to get out and have coffee and talk because she is an insomniac. We went out and had some Krispy Kreme but the frilly coffee maker wasn't working and I did not want regular coffee so I just had donuts. I got into one of my laughing fits over a joke we had said and then when one of the girls from a Christian camp caravan kept looking back at us. We came back to Zachos hq, and talked for a while, and we went to bed. Peter and Christy talked for a bit downstairs before she left to drive to Tallahassee. My, her skirt was short, but then she was young, and everything she wore came from American Eagle Outfitters and most of their skirts are short like they are here.
Like the other days on the trip, it rained off and on, but I honestly don't remember what else happened Friday. I will consult the Oracle, er Chas, when he wakes up, to see if he remembers, and I will edit this entry or update it.
Saturday morning, I had my first scrambled eggs cooked with olive oil. The eggs had feta in them so that covered the saltiness factor that butter usually supplies. Dr Zachos made them for me. He and Popi were going to take the boat out later and invited me to go, so I said yes. They changed their minds and decided that they were going to go Sunday instead, so I ended up going with their friends instead. On the way to the inlet, where the bay and the gulf meet, it did rain briefly, but it was ok since we were all in clothes to get wet in. I enjoyed myself nonetheless. Even though I was a total stranger to them, they were very nice to me, even if they were from Crestview. They offered me food and drink, etc. Due to my light skin and haircolor, I put on lots of sunblock and stayed under the canopy most of the time and just relaxed, playing my Gameboy or doing wordfinds. During this time, Chas and Peter took my car to an audio shop to have the cd player installed. Later that night, we all went out for Thai with some friends of the family, Christy's grandparents to be exact. They were really nice. Dinner was amazing, though the green lights in the place was a little odd. On the way back to hq, we stopped at the store and picked up a few nibbly treats, and rented the MST3K version of The Gunslinger, a horrible western film with a bad plot of corruption, deception, scandal, and murder.
Sunday morning, we finally got to Sonic for Pancake on a Stick. Peter tried it and liked it. We got back to house and packed and then we left. We met my mom in Tallahassee for a late lunch and from there we took an alternate route home, seeing far more churches in a square mile than I'd like to see. Anyhow, on the trip home, we tested out the mp3 player portion of the new cd player, and as it turned out, the cd lasted the entire trip home, ending up on the last track as we were pulling in to our apartment complex. The mp3 cd has 134 tracks on it..wow, that was really cool. We got in pretty late. We made our calls that we got in ok, and then I went to bed, since I went back to work Monday.
So that was it. It may have rained a bit, but it dampen our spirits, and we had fun. Now it has been nearly a week since we left and I wonder where it all went. It seems like so long ago. I have been busy at work, and all the catching up to do with email and such, but now I have a quiet Saturday morning ahead of me. Ahhh...
