16 November 2003 12:20Dear Mr Orzabal,
In 1996, in the liner notes to "Saturnine, Martial and Lunatic" you gave the following notes to track 15-Sea Song:
Sea Song
This track was the B-side to 'I Believe' which was so clearly inspired
by Robert Wyatt that I thought it would be a good idea to cover one of his
songs for the flip side. His voice in my opinion is one of the best, not
something I feel I could match, but if I introduced one person to his music
then it would have been worth it.
Well, your wish has come true, though a bit late, but back then, it didn't all come together for me. I liked the song, but did not see the comparison, nor had the urge to find out more about Robert Wyatt. I did not realize, as I do now, how close the cover is to the original, or how it related to 'I Believe' but I do now. Even if I had, I suspect fate would have held me back another way. Sometimes, things just work out that way. They come to me too early, for whatever reason, but when the time is right, it returns to me in some sort of fated way. So, basically, I wasn't ready for Robert Wyatt back then. But I am now.
The fated way in which he returned to me was with an email newsletter I received from a local music store I support. They were promoting the "Winged Migration" soundtrack. I had already planned to see the film, based on it's own content, but the letter mentioned that Robert Wyatt, along with Nick Cave had participated in the soundtrack, and that the (retained) ticket stub would give a discount to anyone who wanted to get the cd. The flashback to 'Sea Song' (your cover) and the association of Robert Wyatt came back to me then. Flash to the film. I see the film starting, hear the opening music, and I know it is not Nick Cave, so I assume it is Robert Wyatt here. And I am so moved, moved so much I want to cry, but I hold it back as best I can. I knew from that single moment, that I had to have the soundtrack, if only for the that opening song. Since then, I have grown obsessed with all his songs on it, as well as the whole soundtrack, and had to find out more about him. Well, on Friday night, I went to my local cd shop and bought the most recent cd, "Cuckooland", after a brief listen to it. Yeah, I'm gonna buy more. Yeah, and it's all 'cos of you. And the only words I have to say to that are "Thank You."
Sincerely,
Heather
