Been a long time since I brought up the subject of Canada...too long.

I saw a documentary on Vancouver and Victoria tonight. Well, I say documentary, but it was really a travel show that featured the two cities. They touched on a lot of the basic stuff, ya know, for tourists and such, but it was a travel program, hosted by a rather bland host, so no high hopes there. Anyhow, the host pronounced two popular names two different ways, so I wanted to ask my BC Fan Club what the deal was. So, on the pronunciation of the first vowel in each name...

1) Robson-major street downtown...is it "robe" like "bath robe" or "rob" like "I want to rob a bank" or does it not really matter?

2)Burrard-as in the inlet, and the bridge, and the street, and probably other things I don't know of...is the "burr" like in rhyming with "purr" or rather like "pure" or does it not matter here either?

Ok, just curious. I have said Robson the latter way, like "rob a bank" and Burrard like rhyming with "purr" and did not think I had said either incorrectly.

On another level, I wanted to invite ALL of my Canadian friends to comment on this next part, so they should choose to.

What is the general impression of Stephen Harper, now that he has had a little time as PM? I haven't really seen much opinion poll, but I have not looked too hard either. Plus, not all opinion polls are trustworthy these days.

lola_runner and I were craiglisting places around the world, and we craiglisted vancouver actually! Saw some cute places. Impressed.

I have wondered lately just how much you were still interested in Vancouver. I STILL hold it highly esteemed, as one of my favourite places ever.

I'll never forget the map, nor how your eyes lit up about it, and just how you have talked about it ever since. Glad to find out you are still interested in it.

3) Stephen "I am not a Social Conservative threat" Harper.

He's currently sitting at about 30% in the polls, just behind the Liberal party at 32%. He hasn't tried to do anything that would topple his minority government, but he's re-opening the vote on equal marriage rights in a few weeks, so I think that he might be in trouble.

If his government falls, he won't win majority government. If he gets to 18 months and calls an election, he will win a majority. Though he passed a law saying that elections would be called every 4 years and the next one will be in October, 2009. I don't think he'll last that long.

I see Mssr. Harper as being Canada's punishment of the Liberal Party getting a little too big for their britches, and letting 12 years of power go to their head.

He might win the next election, but he won't get a third term. With reforms to the election laws, the Green Party has the largest election budget they've ever had, the NDP is looking more attractive to urban dwellers, and the Liberals will make a come back with a new leader. The Conservative Party of Canada is in deep trouble, and their refusal to provide Canadians with a plan for just about everything is not exactly confidence inspiring.

But even though I use the word conservative, and there's a bunch of stuff he'd like to do to make Canada more like the US, he'll never get away with it with the Canadian electorate.

I've more to say about this, but I've got to get to work.

The interest is still there, though it lies a but more to Victoria at the moment, but we enjoyed both areas very much, of what we saw (and what Chas saw on his former trip). The only thing that isn't there is the $$$ and the paperwork. Of course jobs and housing too, but they can't happen til the former is in place.

Thank you for clearing up the pronunciation thing, as well as the update on the current government positions. I have slacked and have not been following it too much lately. If only we had our NWI channel that carried CBC News...I just never remember to go online for news much. Thanks again! :)
