Jellyfish is a band I first heard of 10+ years ago, on a religious retreat that I was forced into going on by my parents, in Sarasota. The girl I was staying with introduced me to them, and when I saw their first release used in a store, I bought it. I still have the tape...I really ought to fess up the cash and get the cd, but maybe I will save up for the box set instead. To quote an Amazon reviewer, Alan Hutchins :

"Jellyfish-a band that, at worst, gets confused with Jellyfish Kiss, School of Fish, Phish, Fishbone, etc. and at best, rates a footnote in the rock history of the early nineties. The band made a tiny splash on the surface of pop culture/MTV with an impressive debut disc in 1990, which spawned a brace of thrift-store-clad videos and some relentless touring. A band clearly under the influence of their influences (Beatles, Beach Boys, Queen, Cheap Trick to name a few). Time between discs was occupied by some well-placed cameos (Ringo's "Time Takes Time" disc, The " White Knuckle Scorin' " soundtrack). Then came a highly ambitious, magnum-opus-sophomore disc in 1993 and finally, an acrimonious break up. End of story, right?..."

Anyways, I recently put a song from Spilt Milk (by Jellyfish) on a cd compilation I made, and I had forgotten how amazing this group is. I actually used "The Ghost At Number One' for the compilation since it went better with the mix, but here is a song I wanted to share...it's called "Sabrina, Paste and Plato" and here it is:

(written by Andy Sturmer/Roger Manning for Little Appletoons-1993)

Far behind the forest of
flying paper aeroplanes
grazing on the grounds of ponytails
the subsitute is counting down her
ticks till recess
hammering down to size her
fingernails

Because today's the day Sabrina
builds her box lunch buffet
kool-aid, sandwiches, and chips for
all the shoulders
Lunch is on the table soon dessert is
on the floor singing

So serene Sabrina makes me feel so
serene
So serene Sabrina makes me feel so
serene

Chesney's looking dapper in his
brand new dunce cap
strolling down the runway to an
"F" (never has he looked as
lovely)
with all the others watching,
eating paste and plato (the one
and only),
he fights the urge to run and kiss
the chef

But she's a "lovetarian" especially
in the form of puppies
so he keeps his elbows off her
table, but spills the beans
that he loves the girl behind the
boysenberry punch (Sabrina)

So serene Sabrina makes me feel so
serene
(Our lady of the Jabberwock)
So serene Sabrina makes me feel so
serene
(I live to smell her tulip talk)
So serene Sabrina makes me feel so
serene
(Hostess for the show and tell the
shepherdess of the muscatel flock)
Lunchbox, hopscotch on the rocks
with spitballs, pratfalls, alcohol

Sabrina...

So, that's it. I really like some of the wittier plays on words, and the whole song has a silly, childish, Beatles meets Queen meets the Beach Boys feel to it...well, a little less Queen on this song. I'd half expect to see it on Josie and the Pussycats or on The Monkees. One song on the cd ("Bye, Bye, Bye") even has an accordian, tuba, clarinet and harpsichord (and who knows what else) in it! Anyhow, the link above leads to a sample for anyone interested in hearing the song (and a few others).
