18 August 2004 08:10I feel I have been a tad of a dork. I did not put it all together, or perhaps I did but was in denial about the whole thing. My comments were probably a tad insensitive with my gripe about no power when you have lost your home and many belongings, including your car. I think I did refuse to believe that that happened here. Thinking, "No, this isn't really for her building. It is not condemned. That didn't happen here. I am just jumping to conclusions," but it really happened. It is something I would have expected on the west coast where Charley hit the hardest. But not here. Except it did. And I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. I give my full report of our experience with Hurricane Charley later, when I have my own computer and sufficient time to tell the story.

Date: 18 Aug 2004 06:06 (UTC)Yes, it does seem insensitive to complain about no power when there are people who had relatives and friends die in the storm and other ultra-horrible things happen. But you're not gloating, you're simply stating your experience. Maybe you didn't have your house squashed by a tree but that doesn't remove your right to express your discomfort with the current situation. Those who know you know that when you do complain about lack of power you aren't doing it in a deliberately insensitive or cruel way. Your heart is too good to do soemthing like that. Those who don't know you ought to be able to understand that when someone is stressed about something, it feels good to talk about it. That's all you're doing.
An interesting thought occurred to me: You feel bad because you talk about discomfort in the face of power loss when people have lost homes or people they know. Well, there was that typhoon in China where 150 people died -- does that make the people who lost homes or one family member insensitive? There were probably entire families wiped out in China's storm. It just makes no sense to compare misfortunes like that. Just be compassionate when anyone has any problem, yourself included!
