Well, to start out, it was raining this morning. Rain is not really something I am not used to here in Florida, but it doesn't usually rain here until the afternoon, in the warmer months, and I have been ok in the past getting to work on the few wet mornings we have had since I started taking the bus. This morning there was no one here to take me in, like in the past, so...
I said, "I have an umbrella, so I should be ok," and I chose to wear my full closed toe shoes, with socks, and long sleeved shirt with long pants. I said, "I'll wear my Marinac Parka too, since it has a hood and a wetproof barrier between the two layers of fleece, just in case," and I grabbed my stuff and headed for the door. I opened my umbrella, took a deep breath, and proceeded to walk to the bus stop. I walked as carefully as I could. I walked as close to the grass as possible, as the road/parking lot has this sorta dip in the middle, so water gathers there, and it was too wide to jump over without getting wet, or getting my feet/shoes wet. By the time I got to the entrance to our apartment complex, the backs of my legs were wet. Ok, they were very wet, soaked might be a better word. Still, I trudged on...
Now, our complex is on a slight hill, leading to the street where the entrance is, and that road is also on a slight hill. And of course my path to the bus stop was at the bottom of that hill. And there was water pooling in the gutter, and like the water in the parking lot, a step in it would have left my feet and shoes soaked, so...
I decided to cross the parking lot to the other side by the speed bump, which was high enough for me to cross and not get wet feet. From there it seemed that the best way for me to go was to walk on the grassy area that was at a slight incline, leading down to the road. I think to myself I will keep my feet and shoes dryer this way, because if I go down to to the street level, they WILL get wet. For sure. So...
I make my way on the grassy hill, and watch my footing, and it seemed to be ok, but somehow, I heard a squelching sound, and felt a squelchy feel, and I knew that my feet and shoes HAD gotten wet. Err, soaked. But trudge on, as I did before, I said to myself, I can take my shoes off at work and let them air dry. So...
I got to the bottom of the road, to the major road, that I had to cross to get to my stop. Mind you, this is all a 5-10 minute walk, depending on how much traffic there is, and how quickly I can cross...some days are faster than others. All I had to do was cross the street, and hold out a little longer for the bus, and I would have been nearly there. But no! Standing there, on the corner of my street and this major street I had to cross, I was utterly exposed there, more exposed there than before. I had the wet hill behind me, heavy water to my right, wrong direction to the left, and cars directly in front of me. And yeah, go ahead, think it, because it happened. Cars flew by me, and dumped buckets of water on me. I was now drenched everywhere my parka wasn't, meaning thighs and lower. So...
I said "Fuck it, I'm going home to change and call a cab," and made my way back, much faster this time because what did it matter now that I was mostly drenched, right? So I got home and changed, hanging up my clothes to dry, and I placed my shoes on a towel at the edge of the bed, and had the fan aimed at it. The pants are mostly dry now, but the shoes have a ways to go still. Anyhow, I called Chas as it was just before lunch, to see if he could bring me in, saving me the cab fare. Luckily, he was, and I was able to get to work with a few minutes to spare, and mostly dry. When I got to work, and signed in and all, I pulled up the LL Bean website, and began looking at Wellies and longer raincoats and rain pants. :P
Now I am home in my comfy, soft fleece. Still, it all sucked majorly.
