Looks like the rental car is all set for our drive up to Asheville, NC. I stopped at Budget this morning when I ran a few errands with
dorkbot. It is kinda exciting...I haven't been to North Carolina in many years; I think I was there the summer between 6th and 7th grades for a summer camp. Now we are visiting friends of ours that moved there about 4-5 years ago. Chas hes been up a few times, but I've never been able to go up with him. They haven't seen me in years, barring one party last October, for one afternoon, when they came down as a surprise. It should be fun.

I don't know how extensive the problem is, and it may help if I could see the stone. Can you take photos? I want to make sure that the stone will be safe to cook food in- that's something you don't want to mess around with, after all.
Push comes to shove, run it through the dishwasher with no soap - depending on how good your dishwasher is, this may remove some seasoning as well, but worth it if it fixes the problem.
