So, if someone likes (and sometimes wears) patchouli, often wears Birks, and uses reusable menstrual products (cloth pads, etc), does that make them a hippie, even if they don't dress like the stereotyped hippie?

Depends - what's your definition of a hippy? In my dad's eyes, a hippy is a dirty, smelly war objector. Although he apparently also sees hippies as flower-hildren dippies since he said that our elegant wedding reminded him of 'the hippies'.
