9 November 2003 21:22Was it not coincidence that I saw Luther in the theater yesterday, only to be entranced in The Six Wives of Henry VIII today on PBS? The movie being about Martin Luther, the monk who, as Eddie Izzard puts it, "nailed a piece of paper to the church doors that said, 'Hang on a minute (only in German)...,' " and became the father of religious reform and freedom from the Catholic Church. In the documentary on King Henry VIII today, ties of religious freedom and persecution continued along the same timeline as the movie from yesterday. And again Eddie Izzard says it perfectly when Henry tried to divorce his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, and the Pope rejected the request after much debate, "Then I will set up a new religion..." which gave way to the Church of England. I'm sure I don't need to be giving a history lesson on King Henry VIII, but for those wanting more information, or a refresher on this period of history, you can find it with the links above. Or just watch some Eddie Izzard specials, which is probably more entertaining anyhow. :)
