So, the story began with me getting in my car and listening to the radio as I always do in the morning as I make my way to work. I had a feeling of recognition to what was playing, but I couldn't place who it was, though I had a few ideas. So, I decided to call WPRK and ask, since I have their number in my cell now. Turns out I was wrong about who it was, but I was right that I had heard it before. It turned out to be a local band, Red Shift Mantra. Our friend, Rich, is friends with them, and he got me a copy of their cd for Christmas 2 years ago (except that it was a late gift so I got it sometime last year). So as I found this out, as usual, the dj asked if I had any requests. I asked what his "schtick" was and he said that anything goes, so since the RSM song was kinda international/world music sounding, I requested a few of my favorite international/world music bands...Scandinavian faves: Sorten Muld, Garmarna, Loituma, Annbjorg Lien (who I thought the song was by originally) and a Greek artist, Kristi Stassinopoulou. A song later, I heard the opening to 2 Sister's, by Sorten Muld. It's not every day that you hear a Danish band, singing traditional songs to modern sounds...in Danish, on the radio. Granted, it is Rollins College, and they're not your everyday mainstream radio station either. In my opinion, 2 Sister's is not the best song from their debut cd, Mark II, but it *is* the first song I heard from them, and it was enough to spark my interest in the band and to buy this cd. I'm just glad this dj was able to find it (he later said it was in the station's world music section since they have a world music show) and was willing to play it for me. I only hope he liked it. So I'm happy now. : )
Oh, and I forgot to mention that I heard a St Etienne song at the Old Navy store Monday. It's fading, but I think it was Nothing Can Stop Us from Foxbase Alpha, although at the time, I had thought that it was a track from Sarah Cracknell's solo b-sides cd. To hear Sarah sing, as part of St. Etienne or not, is a pleasure all in itself. That surpised me and made me happy too!
