Our roommate is playing a Phantom of the Opera soundtrack, and it is filling the apartment. And it reminds me of my high school junior year marching band show...hearing the same melodies, remembering some of the choreography, and things related to the show. Yeah, lots of bands did it. Our show had some incredible things in it. I wish I had a copy of that show now, to watch again.

12 November 2005 01:01On an impulse buy tonight at Borders, after work, I got two cds: Rough Guide to Hungarian Music and Rough Guide to Russian Music. The Russian one has Vladimir Vysotsky, which reminded me of
katykate from a post way back. But I felt compelled to get the Hungarian one too. I think that if I like the Scandinavian bands as I do, that I will like at least a little of these, which will be worth it in the end to me. I wanted to find something Romanian, since I heard recently that the language is especially beautiful, in a romance language sort of way. Supposedly, Romanian is close to both Italian and French to the point that many words are similar, and a Romanian can get along well in Italy not knowing any actual Italian. I hear the same sort of thing with Turkish and Swedish, that the languages are more similar than most people think. There was a Rough Guide to Turkish Music I wanted to get too, but it was not a priority right now. Maybe if I like the 2 cds from tonight, I'll go for the Turkish one later.
Speaking of Scandinavian, I am thinking of getting the Rhino Horn Neti Pot. It is a Norwegian variation on the traditional neti pot (used for nasal irrigation) from India. I just got a traditionally shaped stainless steel one that was sent to me from India last week which I think is pretty cool, but I think I might learn the technique better with the Rhino Horn. I dunno. Many websites say that stainless is better, and the larger size like the one I got is better, but I am needing help with it. Maybe I need the beginners one. :P The whole thing is kinda weird with letting salt water go up your nose and out the other nostril, but it is supposed the be great at relieving sinus and allergy issues. I am still having teething trouble with it, because when I use it I feel like I jumped in the pool and got water up my nose, in that painful kinda way. While I am getting used to it, I think I am going to try the sesame seed oil/ghee nose massage thingy I read about on a few ayurvedic sites today. It looks harmless, and easy...dip baby finger in the warmed food grade sesame oil (organic if possible), stick it up your nose and massage a little...pinch nostrils together once both sides are lubed and sniff a few times. Maybe it, like neti, is harder than it seems.
Going to go on a cleanse soon, with the help of an ayurvedic practitioner I met in the
naturalliving community. Turns out he lives in Tampa, so next time I am out there visiting my brother, I will have to see if I can drop by for a visit in person, instead of IM. :)
My Glitter will soon be a wife...I am excited for her. I only wish I could be there (in Las Vegas) for the wedding. I will definitely be at the Florida reception. Sigh...she's growing up so fast! :)

Here's something super fast and easy. Depending on the details/quality of your ingredients, it can be healthy too. I just made this. I don't have exact measurements, but I will approximate them.
You'll need:
pasta (shaped variety)
jarred spaghetti sauce
canned tuna, drained
fresh or dried parsley
lemon juice (optional)
capers (optional)
This is what I did:
I filled up my 9" chef skillet with water, and brought to a boil. Added a pinch or two of salt to the water once it was boiling which adds a light flavor to the pasta when cooked. Had about a 1/4-1/3 of the box left (Barilla Plus elbows) so I used the rest of the box. Cooked the elbows about 10 minutes per box instructions, and drained, reserving about 1/4 cup or so of the cooking liquid for the sauce. While the noodles drained, I added a little olive oil to the skillet and added the drained tuna, breaking it up with the wooden spoon. Heated the tuna on medium heat for a few minutes and added about half a jar of spaghetti sauce (Barilla Roasted Garlic and onion) and the reserved pasta water. Use as much as you like, but remember, it is better to start with less, and add more later if you need it. Heated mixture through, and added the pasta back into the skillet. Tossed it in the sauce to coat and added some parsley for the finish. This made about 2-3 servings, depending on how big you consider your serving to be.
If you choose to use the optional lemon and capers, I suggest adding them while you heat the tuna through, but before the sauce is added. I'd say a half a lemon squeezed should do it, but use it to taste really. I honestly don't think it would matter that much.
Vegetarian version, use cannellini beans instead of tuna, and you still have the protein.
There you go. Have at it. Improvise. Do what you do.

9 November 2005 00:55While I don't fill my days listening to folk music, I have to say that I like quite a bit more of it than a number of people in my peer group. I am a fan of Nick Drake, and traditional folk music from Scandinavia, the Middle East, as well as the British Isles. Lately, I have been hearing this one song more and more when I am in Chas's car. And I am obsessing over it. I think it is amazingly beautiful and I love it so much! The song is by an old 60's (traditional) folk revival band from the UK called Steeleye Span, and the song is called "Lovely on the Water" from their 2nd release, Please to See the King. It was from a time when musicologists went back in history and began to bring the old songs back to the modern ear (or that could be era too). Amazing Blondel, who we played at our wedding, was among this movement, along with Pentangle and Fairport Convention (where Richard Thompson got his start). This is the sort of music you are likely hear at Ren Fests, and there is always a table or two at the Highlands games each January here that has some Steeleye Span (!). I think what I like so much about this particular song, is the Middle Eastern tone to the song, which I don't usually associate with the band's work. It is played well, sung well, and has a bit of a trance effect too. Anyhow, if you like this kind of music as I do, then check out the sample on amazon, from the link. It is unfortunate that this song is only in Windows Media Player, but the majority of you guys out there who might be interested in the slightest have it (or access to it) anyway. And, of course, there are other ways to hear it just by googling.

Now who's the Superior Canadian??
:P
I say this, not as a food geek, or someone with superior food and cooking knowledge, but as someone who can read, and generally has a bit of common sense for a lot of things.
So, with the prospect of the Calphalon One rebate offer, I have been on amazon.com looking at a few possible pans to use this and the gift cards with to my advantage. I will still need to see the pans in person and get a feeling for the size and practicality in my kitchen. In the meantime, there's the web to get the ideas going. While I don't need this particular size, since I have it in nonstick already, I still looked at the 9" chef's skillet, also called a "grain pan", for the reviews. Among the many excellent reviews, there were the negative ones. And these people are like, "I can't cook my eggs in it...boo hoo hoo!" and other equally stupid things. Now, go back a few sentences to where I said it is also called a "grain pan" and see if you smart people can figure out the most popular use for this pan. Correct! Grains. This pan is for cooking pasta, rice, barley, etc. GRAINS...which involve using a fair amount of water or other liquid for the cooking process. It is also commonly used to make sauces with because of the narrow bottom and rounded sides. Again liquid. If you want to cook eggs, use a regular skillet, not a chef's skillet. It was not designed with the intent to be able to use it to cook eggs with. Maybe one of the two larger chef's skillets, but certainly not the 9" one. There's just not a lot of flat surface to work with in this small pan. Although, while a little odd, I do admit that I have frequently cooked eggs in mine without a problem, but it *is* nonstick. Eggs just need nonstick. Grab yourself a One Nonstick skillet to keep your collection the same. The only difference is the skillet is nonstick in the nonstick collection. The fact that the lids in the nonstick collection are glass, and stainless steel in the regular collection is just not an issue here, since it is lid-less. I am sure you could probably use the regular One line to do it, but do yourself a favor and stick with a nonstick pan for your eggs, ok?

I bailed on the chicken thing, because I couldn't find the frozen chicken easily in the freezer, so we continued our Sunday tradition of the Bertolli Dinner For Two skillet dinners. Tonight's choice was Shrimp Scampi and Linguine with Bell Peppers (and might I add assloads of garlic...monster huge slices all throughout the dish!). For a frozen meal it was great, but for shrimp scampi it was eh. For a Bertelli dinner it was eh too. The first two meals we got from them were much better in our mutual opinions. BUt, I did use my skillet to make it. Yay! I still need something slightly larger, but this was good. I can't wait to really break it in making something fabulous, something more than a frozen skillet dinner. The $50 rebate offer on the Calphalon One is really tempting. Really. And in combination with my Macy's gift cards, I could get score a few good pieces if I think it out carefully. And that would be good. I just have to start cooking again.

6 November 2005 14:23I forgot to mention it, but my everyday 10" pan came in yesterday, or was it Friday? Whatever.
I am a little disapointed in it though. For starters, it is one of the pans made in China, and you really can tell a difference in just looking at it compared to the chef's skillet I have that was made in Toledo, Ohio. And yeah, what the reviewers on amazon said about the handles is true. They are thin, and kinda pointy in a hard way, but I think the bigger issue is how wide they are. The handle on the lid is 2.5 inches wide which is fine for me, and the handles on either side of the pan are just 2 inches. My tiny hands feel scrunched with my fingers wrapped around them, so I can't imagine someone with bigger hands holding the pan by them. I doubt these issues will play a significant role in my cooking with them, but I will have to cook with it to tell. Still, it makes the newer Calphalon One Infused cookware look more appealing. Made in Ohio, and the handles look better, but I will have to see that in person. I may just try out a piece of it with the Macy's gift cards I still have from earlier this summer. Or with their rebate program thingy which has pans that would be good.
So, all that said, I do still want to cook in it, and I have like, no money til Friday. I have some frozen chicken breasts, so I could cheaply get a can of mexican style corn, maybe some beans, and some yellow rice and throw it all in the pan to cook. That would be fast and cheap. I bet I could do it. I want to do a light curry with winter squash (acorn or butternut?) and sweet potato, along with apples, dried apricots, raisins, and maybe some dates. Sorta fruity, autumn inspired. Maybe serve it with basmati?
I need to get Chas up. We have things to do. Maybe money from a client, and then I could get stuff for a nice dinner tonight.
I also need to remind the men in this household which pans they can use to cook with or wash for me. And since I offer to exclusively wash my own pots and pans, that should not be a problem. I can't deal with typical misuse of the pans like using metal utensils, too high heat, or putting it in the dishwasher. I am too ananl with my cookware. :p

Watching all these videos back to back on VH1 Classic from Depeche Mode this morning is awkard, because it really highlights the difference in the music from when Alan Wilder was part of the band for me. And to me, the difference is staggering. I just never got into any of the releases post Violator. I got into Songs a bit, but that is where I found myself distancing from them. I feel like a bad fan, because I really do like them, but I just can't get into them as much now. I so much prefer the old songs, but I can't get through listening to a whole cd of any of the stuff after that. A song here or there sticks out, but not much more than that. I don't know if it is the music, or Dave's vocals, or whatever. It just doesn't give me the same feelings I get with the old stuff. Sigh...
Wisdom in a cup.
3 November 2005 23:37I had to take the bus again today, so I did a repeat of yesterday, and went to the Nature's Table in a neighboring building to have lunch. While waiting for my sandwhich to be made, I spotted the tea display and asked if I could buy a bag for later. So I got the green tea variety (was Celestial Seasonings, individually wrapped). Here is the quote I saw on the back of the package:
"Knowlwdge comes, but wisdom lingers."-Tennyson
Very cool.

It was dreadful.
1 November 2005 23:36God, today felt SO LONG. I went to my lunch/dinner at 4pm, and finished pretty quickly, so I headed outside to read my book as usual. It was raining so I had to stay under the overhang. Anyhow, it was barely 4:30pm and it felt and looked like it was 7:30pm out. Yeah. I guess both the daylight savings in combination with the cloudy skies made it feel like that. Still, it sucked. Hopefully it will be better tomorrow.
So, because of this result (plunkybug dressed as a disturbing self-made character called "Zippy Tofubiscuits".) on a friend's post, I caved in and did it.

29 October 2005 23:22Well, got 2 of the 3 things accomplished today...the bridal shower, and Cameron's 7th birthday. And I even managed something I didn't plan. :/ While watching the kids playing on their bikes and skateboards, Kris and I took up to the scooters. I must have really bad equilibrium or something in my ears, because I did not have good balance at all. I tried to see if it was better if I switched feet, to use my right foot to push, thinking my right hand is dominant, and stronger, so my right foot should be too. Well, I had even worse balance issues, and collided with the curb, got thrown onto the grass (and got grass stains on my pants, one of my favorite pair), my knee met concrete, and I had a very close encounter with my head and the ground. Luckily the ground only left a jarring feeling of shock in my head that went away quickly, and there is nothing visible to see as evidence. My knee on the other hand, has a big knotty lump, of the purple gray bruise variety. I took Motrin immediately and used a ice pack. It is still lumpy and hurts when I put too much pressure on it, but I suspect I'll live another day or so. :P
I just saw an ad on TV for Children's Pepto. Is this a sign of the continuing degradation of our diet, that they are making Pepto for kids? This is sad.
EDIT: So, I guess because I never had it as a kid, or at least I don't remember having it, I assumed it was not a kids thing, and that if kids had heartburn and indigestion, it was from their diet, which is steadily declining with the availability of fast food and other convenience foods. But I guess I am mistaken.

28 October 2005 23:02Can I just say that today was awesome?? It was...I swear!! The weather was gorgeous. I love any chance to wear my Old Navy Performance Fleece. I got to see
lolaburns very briefly during my lunch/dinner break. And I kicked all sorts of ass on the phones. I was Super Plunky--Defender of Broadband!!
I am also extremely psyched (yes, I said psyched) about tomorrow. I have Glitter's bridal shower tomorrow morning, Cameron's 7th birthday in the afternoon, and a Halloween party in the evening. Who knows what else the wonderful weekend will bring? Maybe my Old Navy gift card and a few hours of shopping?? :)
Well, must attend to the laborious task of taming my mane.
I wonder if I will be able to sleep tonight. Heh.
