Seen lots of really good films and such so far. Had very few breaks until now, and that is only because the show we were going to see was packed; we got there too late and couldn't find 2 seats together. So we will see it later on in the week with its repeat showing.

I think today was better than yesterday. I think[livejournal.com profile] mamarose, in particular, would have appreciated Sister Rose's Passion. Here is a documentary about a Catholic nun from Wisconsin who stood up for Jews and eventually convinced the Pope to make a decree stating that the Church no longer blames Jews for the death of Christ. It goes deeper than that, but it was fascinating to learn about the thought processes that went through her mind while she pursed the research, and so forth.

I think my favorite full length feature was from Friday night, Saving Face, which dealt with modern issues facing the traditional Chinese community in Flushing, NY. The short short version is that this about a young and unmarried Chinese doctor, whose mom sets her up with men, and through a twist of fate, falls in love with another woman instead. She has to deal with that current issue in old Chinese tradition and hides it while her mom, a widow, is pregnant on her doorstep, as refusing to name the father gets her kicked out of *her* parent's house. I hope this gets more distribution.

The shorts #4 program had a lot of hits today. The documentaries were good today, if not a bit emotional. Images of the Holocaust are always difficult to see, especially when you have been raised Jewish and this is something that is always part of your life.

Well, I think I need some rest now.

1. Went to Florida Film Festival opener last night. Saw a great film, Saving Face, and Joan Chen was there with Alice Wu, the writer/director. Had some pretty good food and wine at the party. They had the chocolate fountain again this year. :)

Gotta get ready to meet Chas at the Enzian for the shorts program soon...will probably be in films the better part of the day, and for that matter, the weekend too.

Any of you locals going to see anything?

2. I am happy Chas is slowly, but surely, picking out healthier foods for himself. I am proud of my baby. I love him so much. :)

3. Got an appointment to get my hair cut next weekend. It will just be a trim/re-shape of the cut I got in January. This time I might go a little shorter to help match it closer to the formerly shaved section while it grows out. Hopefully Chas will be with me, and ready with a camera this time. It looks good now (beter when I straighten it though), but when they styled it the first time, well hot damn! :p

4. I love how listening to music in another language changes my perspective, changes my discriminations towards genres of music.

5. Might very well be getting a new cell phone soon.

It would seem that the new Who is gaining new fans. Whee! It is exciting for a fan to see such enthusiasm.

Still obsessing about the Russian cd, and finding the desire to learn more about gypsies, as most of the songs on the cd are old gypsy romance songs. Quite old songs. I've become intrigued at the musical style...and their influence in the countries they populated, among other things. I also want to learn more about the history of the Russian people, to gain greater insight to the songs, and what was influencing the singers and songwriters of the time. I just want to learn more.

I am really getting into Marc Almond's Russian cd, Heart on Snow. It is not new, it came out in 2003, and it is definitely, not new in style. But the appreciation for music I gained as a child from my parents definitely helps me here. Think Jacques Brel, only in Russian, and you can understand why Marc Almond was chosen for the project. I have a few of the songs in my head now. A few of the memorable lyrics.

"Galina dances under red stars
Throwing kisses to the dead Czars"
-Sleeping Beauty

"All we love is who we are
All we were is who we've loved
Just to love we pay a cost but
What was loved is never lost"
-Gone But Not Forgotten

For anyone intrigued enough to hear the old Russian songs, both in English and Russian, you can here them at the iTunes Music Store.

I burned tomorrow night's dinner. The broth had evaporated in the pan and I had thought that it wouldn't since the temperature was as low as it could go. Silly me. On the other hand, tonight's dinner went well. Baked Salmon with Feta and Red Pepper Sauce served with Greek Oven Roasted Potatoes and French Cut Green Beans with Almonds. Orange Cranberry Scones for dessert.

My paid account expired this weekend, but I am broke. I feel bad about it lapsing, but will pay again soon. Nothing has changed much though. Except for phone posting.

I have been wanting to do a phone post, but it seems no one listens, or maybe knows how. So I don't know what the point is of renewing, other than being good and supporting the folks that host my space.

We have a new houseguest. Friend of our roomie from Indiana. Having a fun time showing him around town, and sharing cooking knowledge and stuff. Might become our roomie later this summer if our current one moves out like the plan is so far.

****

Well, I have to go to bed now.

Sometimes I feel selfish for wanting to make a decision for someone else, because it is really their choice in the end, but sometimes I really wish they'd listen to me. Sometimes I feel I know what would be better, and it would be because I care about them.
plunkybug: (Default)
Sometimes I wonder if people really like me, or if they just pretend to because they feel sort of an obligation to.

Someone needs to seriously off Professor Umbridge. Maybe "off" is too strong a term, but she needs a good dose of reality juice or something! PLEASE!! I laugh whenever I read that McGonagall, Snape and Dumbledore talk back to her in their own special ways, and she sits there fuming. :) Now if only Harry could muster the courage to at least stand up to her and tell her off. She may think he is lying, and that is her opinion to believe, but it is also his right to have his own opinion about Voldemort being back whether she choses to believe it or not. Maybe this is my adult mind thinking plot and storyline in a book about a 15 year old boy wizard. Having not been schooled in the UK, I wonder how allegorical this is with the government and politics in the school system. Ah well, need to read more. Waiting to read more how Umbridge is made miserable after all the misery she has dished out the whole book.

I feel like I'm so listless! [livejournal.com profile] glittergrrl69 added another meme to their journal. GOD I HATE THAT!!!1!one!

it's so not fair that I have Friday off but nobody wants to do anything :-(. I'll just sit home alone and eat.

Hey and know what? yesterday at work I got in a huge fight with [livejournal.com profile] warzau_kitten.

I am so pissed off! someone at work found out I was into goth and I think that's why I got fired :-(.

What sucks is that I am so going to kick [livejournal.com profile] mice out of the house. They wore my favorite anime shirt when [livejournal.com profile] alryssa and [livejournal.com profile] estokes was visiting. I've never been so embarassed in my life!

Oh and I am so going to kick [livejournal.com profile] michael_winner out of the house. They got totally drunk Friday and hurled all over the carpet!

Maintenance did come, though once the water had stopped dripping from upstairs, there was not much more they could do in the dark. We were allowed to keep the power on while we slept, despite the crackling in the circuit breaker box from the water. I did not sleep well for the next few hours, still edgy from being up earlier. We had thought to ourselves how lucky we were when this happened, as we had moved stuff around the previous afternoon to sell our hutch to a friend. It, and other valuable stuff, would have been damaged by the pearly drips of water in the dining room. Then we might not have been able to sell the hutch. Anyhow, the professional cleaner guys came around 10am, and used the water extractor thing, but left big fat noisy fans to dry the rest of the water from the carpets. They're still damp and starting to smell. They also turned the power off to fix the circuit breaker box again. While this has been going on, the water also damaged the frame to the front door, making it excessively difficult to open and close as well as lock. They are still working on that and the carpet guy will be back to deodorize the carpets. And our fridge is out too, though the freezer is working, but that is a different issue, and they are working on it now, along with the door. My apartment is full of people working on things.

There is a big leak in the plumbing from our neighbors directly above us, and we have a big leak in both our kitchen from the vent for the heating and air, and dining room where there has been a long crack running the span of the apartment since we got here. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] gayscout for waking us up to alert us, even if it was 4:30 am. We ended having to call the police because no one returned our call from maintenance and our upstairs neighbors were not responding, which of course is normal for this time of morning. I believe they got the water cut now, though we are still having drips, big drops, though I do think it is slowly letting up. And it is leaking water from the circuit breaker box. We have been through this route before recently. We are soon to expect no power again I feel certain. The police alerted the apartment manager and someone from maintenance is supposed to be on their way. Soon I hope. And with a water sucker outer vacuum cleaner thingy.

I fucking tore through Goblet of Fire. I've been thinking nearly nothing other than Harry Potter recently, and the time in between reading Order of the Phoenix is like...is like torture. This must be what it feels like for a junkie looking for their next fix. At least mentally. I can't believe fucking Dementors in fucking chapter one! I am in for a ride with this one.

I should've known. Last night the heating/air unit breaks and today I woke up with needle piercing pain in my ears, an upset stomach, and a minor headache (from the congestion giving me the ear pain), so I stayed in til my sinuses drained enough and waited for maintanece who never showed (but I have seen them in the area helping other apartments). I went to Chamberlins to get the MiBrain migraine supplement and Thai rice noodle soup (spicy for my sinuses to drain more) for lunch. Finished that, called boss to see if it was too late to go in to work (no), found out I am back to the boss before him. I get in my car and drive to work...only my oil light starts going off again. Yep, the same problem from a week ago. So I got off I-4 at Altamonte and pulled over into a bank parking lot and turned the car off. Gave it a few minutes and the light was off again, but I called the mechanic who said to bring it by. Lucky they were nearby. They checked the oil, and I had plenty, but they did not have time to look at it today. They said it might be my oil pump or it might be wiring. I already paid $200 for an oil pressure sensing switch and pan gasket last weekend. As I make my way to the exit, I notice that there is a lot of traffic, and combined with the rain, I would not get to work until about 4pm, and that would give me 2 full hours of work til my shift ended, and since I have plans for this evening, I would not be able to stay late. So I said fuck it and went home. It wasn't worth the $20 I would make. The heating is still not fixed, but this warm fleece pullover and warm laptop are doing an good job. At least it is not freezing outside or anything. Speaking of weather, WTF? Is the East coast jealous of all the rain from the West coast? I have to say, I don't remember a wetter winter here than this year. On that note, I do much prefer winter rain to summer rain.

On a good note, I did a random google search and found out that they just released Degrassi Junior High on DVD a month ago, due to the success of TNG that is airing now. Amazon has it for those interested. It has the first season on 3 dvds, including Lucy and Voula shoplifting, and Spike realizing she is pregnant (in like 7th or 8th grade!)...two episodes that stuck with me since I saw them on PBS all those years back. I hear the picture quality is crap, but it should be ok. I have seen some bad transfers before.

I think this day calls for hot tea and a bath.

I miss the footed pajamas I used to have as a kid.

More sinus based today I think. That, and I think I am becoming rather sensitive to the weather.

I went to Chamberlin's yesterday, in search of something for my migraines with my recently gained knowledge, and it looks like I might've found something good. Only I will have to wait until I have a little more money to buy it. So maybe this weekend after I get paid again. I am also waiting for my friend to look it over and give me the ok...she is good with supplements and knows me well.

The Details )

I may start out by taking 1-2 a day and keeping a few spares on me for on the spot treatment if I am away from home. Not sure if it will work like that though. What I like about this blend is that it has things are good for you anyway, like the vitamins and minerals, and the EFA's (which should also help the hormonal side of my migraines).  I know that the herbs are usually taken when it may strike, and white willow bark is used as a pain reliever, hence my plan to keep a few spare on hand.

I hope this works to at least lessen the number of migraines and reduce the severity so that I can reclaim my life back. Hopefully.

As many people well know. I suffer from frequent headaches, usually migraine or sinus, but both equally bad and debilitating. Earlier today, in reading the migraine management link from Glitter in my last post, interesting things have come up. Things I knew, but more importantly things I did not know. I really want to stop (or at least reduce the frequency of) my migraines, but some of the triggers are things out of my control...like being a woman, and the weather outside. Currently, I treat them with Excedrin or Benadryl, sometime alternating throughout the day, and sleep (in a dark room if possible). I am going to look into some of the more natural options first, like magnesium and riboflavin (B-2), and maybe butterbur which is something relatively new. I had no luck with feverfew, but mainly because I couldn't stomach it. It tasted horrible (like dirt), but granted it *was* liquid, and I never tried it in pill form. I was also reading about the prescription medicines, though I admit to not having much luck with them in the past. Imitrex sent fire pulsing through my sinuses and made it hurt to swallow, and was just as debilitating as the migraine alone. I was told about a lower dosage clearing that problem up, but that is only in a nasal spray, and I am not good with those. Not to mention it is $50 on my insurance plan, so yeah, I want to try something else. I tried Elavil daily for the prevention of them, but that left me a fatigued emotional wreck and I stopped it after a week. Now I have seen that there are other prescriptions out there and was wondering if anyone on my friends list has experience with any of them and could give me some feedback for if I decide to go that route. I would like to have more info about these medicines before going back to my doctor and asking about a prescription. One further note, for those who have not seen me or know me outside this journal, I should end by saying I am very petite, slightly over 5' and a little over 100 lbs, so I am the size of a teenager, which may be one of the reasons I react to medicines strongly.

Any thoughts tips etc would be helpful. I think I may cross post this into a community, but which one? ah, just found [livejournal.com profile] migraines

Got back from LA Tuesday night. Not too tuckered. Had BBQ at Sonny's on the way home.

Had a vicious migraine Wednesday. Had one the day after we got to LA. Delayed reaction?

Back to work today. Boo. Oil light came on while nearly home. False alarm again? Saw Twelfth Night at Rollins College with Chas.

Signed up for overtime for tomorrow that I may have to renig on because of the oil light, and get penalized if I can't get there.

Boo.

There are more details about the trip coming, but later, when I have a little more time to update.

I love you all.

Just came back from the Mikado, and I have to say, as operas go, this is a good one to start with. It's from Gilbert and Sullivan, those masters of the musical. Not only is it comical, but it is in ENGLISH. Even so, they had supertitles (the opposite of subtitles...above the actors rather than below). I think the best part was getting dressed up. I finally got a chance to wear the dress [livejournal.com profile] maggie226 gave me what seems like eons ago. And I must say I looked fabulous. I added the pearls my parents gave me, and a small clip to pull part of my hair back, and away from my face. My mom let me borrow her shawl, and she gave me a small bag of stuff from my aunt which included a small leather purse from Coach that worked well.

I am just about packed, barring a few last minute items and my carry on, which is in the car at the moment. But I am leaving work at 1:30 and the cab is coming at 4:30, so I won't feel super rushed. I should probably get some sleep now as tomorrow is a big day.

Oh, and believe it or not, but my schedule has managed to get more screwed up. Again. Way more complicated than anyone really needs or cares to know.
plunkybug: (Default)
It will be a busy next few days until we fly out. Friday night I took Chas out to Starbucks for a treat. I bought us some Chantico drinking chocolate. It is so good! My mom was here yesterday for a few hours. We had a late, and very filling lunch at Polonia. She and Chas each had the Big Polish Sampler, while I had the smaller but still large Polish Combo. I had to take some of it home. My mom and I played a few rounds of Scrabble and headed off to go on the Winter Park Boat Tour, which is something we had wanted to do on a previous visit, but did not have the chance then. She enjoyed it. We went to the store for a few things, came home, and made tea to go with our poppyseed cake we got to go from the restaurant earlier. She headed out after that. And Chas and I did stuff and watched "A Mighty Wind" which was really funny.

Today, in an hour, we are going downtown for a tea time at the library and a visit from "Queen Elizabeth I" as well. My dad knows the group that does these things, and the woman who plays the queen. Chas is doing an article on this for the paper. After that we are going to a friend's house. She is going to do ear candles, in hopes of making my ears in good shape to fly in a few days. I am all stuffy today. Chas has work he has to do at the paper so he can leave to go to LA alright, without leaving them high and dry.

I have tomorrow off because they fucked up my schedule next week with my vacation time and normal days off. So I had to work with the ops manager before I left on Friday because I was not confident what my manager had told me, and it turns out he was wrong. I have never had so much trouble before with my vacations. It is actually good that I have the day off though, because it will give me a chance to do laundry and pack, though my Old Navy order is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow, and I intend to pack what I got unless it doesn't work out, which in that case I will go to the local store and swap or get a refund. I also intend to re-dye my hair if I have the chance. And money.

Tuesday after work around 8pm I am going to see my first opera, The Mikado, by Gilbert and Sullivan. It should be interesting. Then I have a half day at work Wednesday, come home, finish the last details and hop in the cab and go to the airport. Then we will be in LA!! Yay!!!

Well, I need to finish my chai and get dressed to go see the queen at tea time.
